Kansas Metro Safety and Security Services was created to provide modernized security services to clients throughout Kansas and Western Missouri. Seeing a desperate need for a technology-based, more modernized security agency to help fill a gap in our state's needs for professional security staffing. Security guards date back to 1850 with the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Being the only security company of its day, it was through the vision of the owners to develop standards to provide clients the security services they desperately needed.
Since the early 1990’s, the security enforcement profession has become ineffective in dealing with modern society's criminal enterprises. The theory used as a template by most companies was to hire an educated person who had communication skills. Then place a sharp-looking uniform on them and assign them to a site or patrol route. Outside of on-site training, no money was ever placed into developing that security guard into a key piece in the chain of proactive security enforcement. Most security guards not only lacked defensive tactics training, but also had never obtained basic first aid or CPR training.
Unlike most states, Kansas and Missouri do not have state-regulated training requirements for security guards. The state will rely on each city to develop standards in training to ensure security guards are well-equipped for anything they encounter during their tour of duty. However, to this day, only a small handful of cities require licensing, while even fewer offer actual training for security guards. Leaving approximately 93% of all security guards in these three states lack any training in arrest control, defensive tactics, basic first aid and CPR, Interviewing and 4th Amendment Rights, state and local laws of security guards, and fire watch (FEMA required course prior to security managing a building lacking a fire alarm and suppression system).
It was upon those facts that it became clear that the security industry needed ratification to be effective for the clients, promote safe schools, and decrease both people and property crimes on our clients’ properties. At the beginning of the in-depth search for accredited education programs available here in Kansas and Missouri, we quickly found that it was not as simple as finding only one school/educator to provide the training our security officers need to be effective in the field.
Knowing that first aid was an important factor, we developed a relationship with the American Red Cross to teach our security officers the Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Program. This program uses a scenario-based approach to develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that drive better patient outcomes. It is consistent with AHA Guidelines for CPR/ECC, and covers breathing and cardiac emergencies – including CPR, AED, and obstructed airway – for adult, child, and infant patients.
